Reversible and flexible-head ratchets by drive size

A ratchet turns the socket, and its tooth count decides what happens in a tight engine bay or a crowded panel. A fine mechanism needs only a few degrees of swing before it re-engages, which is the difference between turning a fastener and lifting the socket clear on every stroke. Coarser mechanisms are more robust under shock loading and better suited to heavy assembly.

Drive size follows fastener size: 1/4" for trim, instruments and small threads, 3/8" as the everyday compromise, and 1/2" for suspension, structural bolts and anything a torque wrench will finish. Handle length sets the available torque, and an extendable or knee-jointed body reaches past obstructions without stacking extension bars. A flexible or locking head angles into recesses, and a sealed mechanism keeps grinding dust and washdown water out.

Check that the reversing lever can be worked one-handed with a glove on. Part of the wider ratchets range, and where only the mechanism has failed a replacement ratchet head restores the tool.
